Dessert Hummus- Kid approved

I’ve had a few cans of Chick Peas just sitting in my pantry, my plan was to make hummus with them because I LOVE hummus yall, like seriously.
Today I decided I needed to make something with them. Well.. I did just that.
Joseph and I needed a little afternoon snack, something a little sweet but still friendly on those calories..ya know?
So, We pulled out the blender and got to making some Dessert Hummus. I got the recipe from my Sister Susan

 Dessert Hummus

2 cups rinsed and drained chick peas
1/3 cup creamy peanut butter
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/2 tbs vanilla extract
1 tbs flax seed
1/2 tbs cinnamon
Chocolate chips- as much as you want. I wont judge.

Mix ingredients in a blender/food processor until smooth and creamy, serve in a bowl with a garnish of mini chocolate chips if you desire. Apples, Graham Crackers or any of your favorite fruits are delicious with this dip! – Enjoy

A big THANK YOU to my sister for allowing the share of her recipe ( You can find the original HERE ) , I did add cinnamon and flax seed to my hummus and use natural peanut butter.. Joseph approved and devoured it! We stored the left overs in a sealed container and will have it for that sweet tooth kick over the next few days.

No-Bake Energy Bites

If you attended the Open House, I’m sure you may have grabbed an Energy Bite or two while you were there! They were delicious, smooth and hit that sweet tooth just right! Kerry made those tasty little protein packed energy bites and shared the recipe! I would like to dedicate the very first food post on here to those delicious little bites! Thank you Kerry for sharing the recipe! Y’all Enjoy!

Energy Bites- 

What you will need :

1 cup dry oatmeal
1/2 cup chocolate chips or M&M’s
1/2 cup Peanut Butter – Smooth
1/2 cup ground flax-seed  ( TIP- Sam’s club sells an awesome Coconut,flax & chia seed mix!)
1/2 cup Honey
1 tsp Vanilla
1/3 cup vanilla protein powder

– wash your hands, add all ingredients in to a medium-sized mixing bowl, stir until combined.
once combined, roll your mix into balls, store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

These little guys are great for a pre-workout, post workout , mid afternoon snack or even for those times when you just need a little something sweet ! You can also switch up the peanut butter for any style of nut butter, mix in some coconut flakes, raisins or create your own taste!

Beginners workout’s – Pinterest Inspired

I can’t always make it in to the gym to work out ( C’mon, I’m human) . However I personally feel like you can do SOMETHING to get your heart rate up even just for 30 minutes a day.or maybe just making sure you’re blasting through your daily steps goal. Easy Peasy.
For the days I can’t make it in to the gym to work out I like to browse Pinterest for some new at home ideas. Doing this keeps up my excitement for working out. Some people may enjoy routine, however I need a little twist here and there.  Check out some of the beginners workouts I’m loving from Pinterest!

These are great workouts for beginners no matter if you’re using them in the gym or saving them for something you can easily do first thing in the morning ,on your lunch break in the office or even before bed at night! I personally like to get in a 30 second plank before bed at night and about 30 bicycle crunches. Feel free to save these, print them out or even screen shot them to your phone! Staying On Track While Traveling

I spent a few weeks in Texas and my main focus was not backtracking while I was there and  also allowing myself to relax and enjoy my little vacation. I have been working hard to get where I’m at and I wont be giving up anytime soon, Dedication Y’all, it shows over time.  So, how did I do? Honestly not too bad. I’ll share a few tips on how I stayed on track below.

Exercise – No brainer, right? you should still keep moving, whether it’s going for a walk around the block, using the hotel gym or even just a small no- gym no- weights workout in your hotel room or wherever you’re staying at. Pinterest is great for simple no gym exercises, make a board and get to pinning some ideas!

Give in to temptations– you’re probably thinking “, Whoa,WHAT? ” Hey, It’s OK to enjoy yourself, c’mon..you have to treat yourself every now and then and it is okay to say yes to that carb filled dinner or maybe that sugary alcoholic beverage… It’s okay to treat yourself but the biggest fact of this is portion control. seriously. ONE of those super cool adult beverages with the fancy fruit on top. Looking at a  Carb filled dinner? Simply ask for a to-go box before you even dive in, portion half of that dinner in to the to-go box and only eat what is in front of you. If you’re eating at home with family or friends then portion out your plate, sit down at the table and leave the rest of the food in the kitchen.  The moral : Enjoy yourself, but just make smart choices. Your body will thank you later.

Hydrate- Hydrate- Hydrate– Keep a bottle of water with you at all times, throw one in your purse.. maybe splurge and get yourself a super cute Camelbak bottle that won’t leak & drink your water all day erry-day. We have smart phones, set a reminder to gulp down your water if you cant seem to remember to drink. Travel can be hard on your body causing swelling, fatigue and more. Make sure you Keep yourself hydrated especially if you’re indulging in Chips and Queso in Texas 😉 haha!

Snacking– So, We drove to Texas & I am a firm believer in the power of a cooler for a road trip. If you’re driving, pack healthy snacks and portion them out before hand. Hyvee or Target carries portion control zip lock baggies, I packed mixed nuts for some natural energy, air popped popcorn without butter ( just our preference) a few carbonated waters for a nice bubbly pick me up while driving, regular water bottles, sandwiches, apples sliced up the night before and soaked in a water lime juice mix to keep fresh, baby carrots and of course a few granola bars for a sweet treat. Not only are you making better food choices while on the road but you’re also going to save money this way! Win-Win!

It’s easy, a little determination and planning is all you really need and I believe that If I can do it, you can too!

Non-Scale Victories

-Gah- I’m so sorry that I have been a bit M.I.A.
I am currently down in Texas visiting my family and helping my sister celebrate her birthday as well as her bridal shower! What-What!

I’ve been thinking about this post for a while now, why? Because I am one of those “I HATE THE SCALE” people :: can I get an AMEN to that?!? ha-ha okay ladies, seriously. In a world that revolves around numbers and sizes, I feel like we really need to focus on those simple Non-scale Victories! (NSV) for short. I used to weigh in e-v-e-r-y Wed, I called it.. weigh in Wed. One pound down (sweet!) the next week.. 2lbs up. uh, what?? However, my clothes were fitting looser and I could tell in just my face, hands and feet alone that I was loosing weight. hmph. So I said “Hey scale..what the heck is wrong with you?”… I got nothing back. Lame.
So I let out my irritation rant on Instagram (@NLWGetsfit) and another one of my fitness followers told me “Don’t forget, muscle weighs more than fat.” OHHHH DUHHHHH. *face palm*. THAT my friends, is when I decided that I was done with the scale & I gave it a nice “Bye Felicia” and put it away.

I started focusing on measurements, my jean size around my waist, my face and honestly just how I felt. Thats whats important, right? Making sure YOU feel great, I call that the endorphin high, its a beautiful thing.
Some of my favorite NSV’s are simply when I do a face to face.. I use my before face picture from back in November and then when I’m feeling pretty, Ill take a new updated face picture and compare. It’s a confidence booster & reminds me of why I’m doing this..

Yesterday I took Joseph on a Target run and some other errands. I threw on a fresh out the dryer pair of jeans and noticed they were kinda loose (awesome-sauce!) well, by the time my errands were done, Joseph had fallen asleep in the cart and i’m trying to carry him out to the car while also trying to keep my pants up. -sigh- I kept reminding myself HEEEYY! NSV for the win! Right now, I am in between two sizes..and every day I ask myself..”why don’t you just wear leggings, lets be honest self..Jeans suck.” Once you go leggings you never go back, right?

My biggest NSV yet is just the fact that I’m being told that I am inspiring others around me..and even across the country! I have SO much support and have run in to a few people at the grocery store who have told me that I look great! 😉 My confidence and energy level is on the rise and that to me is an amazing NSV!

Gym Confidence

We’ve all been there, Standing in the Gym trying not to get in anyone’s way, hoping you don’t look like a newbie as you try to figure out where to start or even how..Gym’s are intimidating, So how do you build up your gym confidence and start working out?

I’ve been there, many times & I’m the worst when it comes to comparing myself to other women. I see those girls in the classes that have all the moves down, they don’t seem to have any issues keeping their breath and look amazing in those fancy leggings.Those gym goers who are sprinting on the treadmill or lifting weights like they’re fuzzy puppies. Yup, the gym is one big intimidation station for those who are either new or returning to the world of fitness.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

 First things first is to realize that we are all in the gym for the same reason, to better ourselves. No one is there to judge you, pick at you or bring you down. Herz Fitness Studio taught me that. When I was living in Austin, I joined a big name gym, I took a few classes and worked out with my sister, but when I moved to the other side of Austin and started going to the gym by my apartment..it was all new to me.There were a lot of people who looked like they’ve been working out their whole life. I headed for the locker room and on the way I found a separate room towards the back that was dedicated for women only, I slipped in there for my workouts every single time I went to the gym. I was hiding because I didn’t want anyone to judge me. Working out with your friends or family is a great way to build confidence in the gym, you’re already comfortable around people you know well, right? So why not invite a friend or family member to join the gym and workout with you!

My lack of Gym confidence is the biggest reason for why I would stop going to work out, I get intimidated and just quit. Well,I told myself that this time would be different! When I started working out at Herz Fitness Studio, I honestly didn’t know the machines. My first night working out I just stuck with what I knew ( Like the treadmill) & left it at that. However, the more I went in to work out the more my curiosity began to grow. Lets face it, doing the same thing over and over gets boring, So finally one night I just went up to the front desk and asked if they could show me how to work some machines. It was as easy as that & now I’m comfortable using any of the machines available!

Let me just assure you that at Herz Fitness Studio, you are not alone. We are all one big Fitness Family & we are all here to support each other! I hope no one feels like the black sheep & if you do, please don’t be afraid to branch out and ask for help or advice!
